PORK THIS IN YOUR PIPE AND SMOKE IT

“Be a real journalist.” That’s what Requests’ manager Brendan Smith told me yesterday afternoon, when I popped-in at our friendly neighborhood record shop to pick through their latest crates of old vinyl and buy a lighter to, um, light some candles.
Why was Smith calling me out? Well it turns out that people actually read (?!) my article in MauiTime‘s foodie section last week–a humorous piece titled “Ground Hog Day” which celebrated all things pig by taking a Pidgin angle on the irrelevant-in-Hawaii event of Groundhog Day and its proximity to pigskin fans’ X-mas (i.e. Super Bowl Sunday; to read the story, CLICK HERE). In that piece I mentioned that bacon flavored rolling papers are available at Requests ($2) and since, sales of that piggy product have skyrocketed. Seriously!
Smith says they’ve had the papers in stock for awhile now and until the article had only sold two packets. But in just a week, they’ve moved most of their stock (surprisingly, mostly to tourists) and have but five packets left–well, make that four. Smith gave me one on the house (and a lighter to boot) so I can “be a real journalist” and try ’em myself.
So here’s the verdict: yuck!–but not intolerable. Pre-or post-lit, it doesn’t smell like bacon–though it does have a slightly peppery odor. And when you lick it, it’s shockingly salty. That’s about it. Then again, its little piggy print is darling–and if nothing else, I was inspired to use cutely patterned papers henceforth…
IN OTHER NEWS:
“Cashaka” shirts are also available at Requests ($20)–screen printed with a clever re-mix of the famous photo of Johnny Cash (formerly) flipping the bird, now giving one shaka! Here’s a weird Wailuku wearing one:
