Friday (November 5), 6-8pm, Market & Main Streets, Wailuku, free
Years ago, I heard Wailuku described as “a diamond in the rough,” and boy has the town’s signature monthly event exhumed that gem and put on the polish. But the thing I love most about Wailuku First Fridays is how it’s turned a clique into a community and has become a place for all Mauians to congregate. This month—first thing’s first—the beer garden is back! A group of hardworking gentlemen have been laboring rain or shine to transform the sandlot between the mauka-side shops and American Savings Bank into a sodded oasis. Even more bountiful than the brew is the entertainment. To name a few: Inna Vision (pictured) takes to the Maui Thing main stage; Ikaika Blackburn plays at the Banyan Tree Park (brought to you by the Pono… Do What Is Right! store, who’ll be celebrating their grand opening); Cocoland Band performs at the Main Street Promenade; and the Arts Education for Children Group and Lily & Toby play at Wailuku Coffee Company. Also that night, don’t miss Maui OnStage’s “Girls Downtown” event at the ‘Iao Theater (5:30-10:30pm; $12 donation). It’s a night of myriad ways to pamper yourself, including a dessert buffet, fashion vendors and $5 manicures, plus entertainment including a dance piece by Visions Conservatory and a screening of the musical Hairspray. Plus—because it pays to be first—be one of the first 100 patrons and get a coupon pack with deals from Maui Thing, Bohemia, If the Shoe Fits, Pink by Nature and more.
