Buenas tardes, amigo / hola my good friend / Cinco de Mayo is on [Thursday] / and I hoped we’d see each other again.” Those are (slightly altered) lyrics from Ween’s song “Buenas Tardes Amigo” (Chocolate & Cheese, 1994) and I’ve been dying to print them since last Cinco de Mayo. With that off my chest, I’ll kindly ask you to check out our Da Kine Calendar starting on page 22 for all da 5/5 scoops, since the islandwide festivities are too numerous to mention here…
“Mohala Mai,” May’s Wailuku First Friday theme (May 6, 6-8:30pm), reflects “the blooming of a new flower, a new life and the continuous evolution of Wailuku.” Native Intelligence celebrates their second anniversary with an ‘awa bar and mean Hawaiian grinds, plus the indigenous tunes of Ikaika Blackburn, Kamakoa Lindsey and Olahou. And street-wide entertainment includes Lily Maeola with Jarren Patao, Molten Soul and Sweet Spot. Also marking momentous Market Street occasions are Shuga Boutique Salon (formerly Wakamatsu Fish Market) and Salon 253 (formerly Elaine’s Beauty Shop), who invite you to their grand opening festivities. And as the evening winds down, take your Mum to see My Mama Monologues at the historic Iao Theater, (8pm; $18 adults / $10 keiki & students / free for mothers 80-years-old or better when accompanied by their children and/or grandchildren; mymamamonologues.com). The show features 24 original monologues performed by local actors—stories that producer Pat Masumoto calls “milky, hot, cold, ticklish and bittersweet”—and proceeds benefit the Japan Mothers Association.
