It’s always a good day for a leisurely drive Upcountry, but no better day than this Sunday to visit Tedeschi Winery and Ulupalakua Ranch, for their special Ulupalakua Cares event. Once you arrive on the winery grounds, your ears will be treated to the string-picking stylings of Joshua Kahula with Derick Sebastian (12-3pm) and, from Lanai, Polihua (3-4pm). Between brushing up on the latest efforts by local conservation groups at one of the many informational booths, tasting wines (complimentary; be sure to try their syrupy Framboise de Maui raspberry wine, paired with a morsel of white chocolate with macadamia nuts), and picking up “picnic fixin’s” hot off the grill at the Ulupalakua Ranch Store—where you can also catch local music by Bradda Francis Koahou (11:30am-3pm)—be sure to save time for the two informative talks also scheduled for that afternoon. “A Voyage Back in Time: The Natural Treasures of Ulupalakua Ranch,” will be led by esteemed botanist Dr. Art Medeiros (12pm) and “How to Determine the Value of a Tree,” (I’m guessing it ends like a MasterCard commercial), with arborist Ernest Rezents (2pm), including a walking tour of the winery’s grand, centenarian trees. If upon leaving Ulupalakua still calls, the winery is open daily from 10am-5pm, alongside the ranch store’s daily hours of 9:30am-5:30pm. And save the date of December 5 for Ulupalakua Sparkles, the final quarterly installment of 2010’s Sunday Drive events. 878-6058; www.ulupalakuaranch.com , www.mauiwine.com
