Saturday (October 9), 12pm, Wailuku Coffee Co., Free
“Photographs of Auwahi and Flora on Maui,” a new showing featuring works by Duane Sparkman, will open at noon tomorrow (October 9)at Wailuku Coffee Company (formerly Cafe Marc Aurel).
THE FLIER EXPLAINS:
“Auwahi, an ahupua’a east of Kanaio, was (once) known as ‘the tool box of Maui,’ supporting over 50 rare Hawaiian trees; most of which were used by the Hawaiians for tools, medicines, canoes, clothes, fireworks, fish poisons and dyes. (However,) cattle grazing has changed the landscape. With the help of the Ulupalakua Ranch and Leeward Haleakala Watershed Partnership, (it’s) being put back.
Having lived on Maui for over 15 years and doing volunteer work in the areas from Kahakuloa to Auwahi, (plus) collecting Hawaiian plants for my yard in Wailuku, has taught me a lot about the culture of Hawaii. I invite you to Wailuku Coffee Company to see some of the photographs I have takeen in Auwahi and around Maui.”
OUT WITH THE OLD, IN WITH THE NEW. BUT FIRST… Here are images of the current show, which ends today (October 8). For the last month, four spray-painted (yes, spray paint!) works have been on display. For more information, e-mail: marvinmadariaga@gmail.com
Update: So, the show opened and since I spend nearly every non-working moment at the Wailuku Coffee Company, getting my jolt on for the working moments, I snapped a few Monday-after photos to peak your interest in the current show:
