If I fooled you into thinking Celebrity Death Match might be coming back–sorry. But, you’ve come to the right place anyhow! Here’s a peek at This Week’s Picks:
Thursday (May 27) Castle Theater, 7:30pm, $17-32 / Saturday (May 29) Maui Theatre, 9:30pm, $15/$25/$45
Second only to 3 Ninjas Kick Back, my favorite flick of 1994 is True Lies. Kidding! I really do like True Lies. On Saturday, “True Lies star Tom Arnold and friends” take to the Maui Theatre stage as May’s feature artist in the Maui Celebrity Series. Though I must admit, I’m slightly confused by commercials touting Arnold just as “True Lies star.” What about Coneheads (1993)?! And, um, Soul Plane (2004)? OK. Got me. “True Lies star Tom Arnold,” works fine for ad spots. Maybe “Coneheads and True Lies star,” next time… Arnold’s autobiography is titled How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years. If that sounds like the story of your life (it’s mine), you’re sure to enjoy his stand up. The “and friends” part means creator/producer/crooner Brian Evans. “On behalf of the proud people of Hawai’i,” Governor Linda Lingle recently issued Evans commendation for bringing celebrities to the island, saying it “is particularly meaningful during these difficult economic times.” Yep. You know you’re jealous… If the times aint got you down and your funny bones are restless, hit up the MACC tonight for even more live comedy.“Filipino funny man” Rex Navarrete will command the Castle Theater with his popular ethnicomic bit. I’ll bet you a Louis Vuitton bag that us Filipinos are likely to enjoy being laughed with instead of at (por a change). Though perhaps least to his credit is lending voice talent to The Nutshack. (Creators, um, uphold their invitation to join in “as they offend all cultures, sexes and animals.” Case in point: episodes like “Bob Sagat Dies – Nutshack 420 Episode” and “Chode Warrior.” ) But, Navarrete’s series Rex in the City is all the rage on MTV Philippines. Both are “BIG SHOWS.” Find them in MauiTime’s Da Kine Calendar HERE.

“On behalf of the proud people of Hawai’i,” Governor Linda Lingle issued a certificate of commendation to Brian Evans, creator of The Maui Celebrity Series. It states that Evans’ work in bringing “celebrities (who) have included William Shatner, Roseanne Barr and Joan Rivers,” to the island “is particularly meaningful during these difficult economic times.”
