Second only to 3 Ninjas Kick Back, my favorite flick of 1994 is True Lies. Kidding! I really do like True Lies. On Saturday, “True Lies star Tom Arnold and friends” take to the Maui Theatre stage as May’s feature artist in the Maui Celebrity Series. Though I must admit, I’m slightly confused by commercials touting Arnold just as “True Lies star.” What about Coneheads (1993)?! And, um, Soul Plane (2004)? Arnold’s autobiography is titled How I Lost 5 Pounds in 6 Years. If that sounds like the story of your life (it’s mine), you’re sure to enjoy his stand-up. The “and friends” part mostly means creator/producer/crooner Brian Evans. “On behalf of the proud people of Hawaii,” Governor Linda Lingle recently issued Evans commendation for bringing celebrities to the island, saying it “is particularly meaningful during these difficult economic times.” Yep. You know you’re jealous… If the times aint got you down and your funny bones are restless, hit up the MACC tonight for even more live comedy. “Filipino funny man” Rex Navarrete will command the Castle Theater with his popular ethnicomic bit. I’ll bet you a Louis Vuitton bag that us Filipinos are likely to enjoy being laughed with instead of at (por a change). Navarrete: 242-7469, mauiarts.org / Arnold: www.mauicelebrityseries.com
