We read a lot about Maui’s growing film industry, but don’t actually see a lot of movies made here by people who live here. Brian Kohne is an exception–he’s from Maui, and actually made a movie about Maui–Get a Job. Released in 2010, it was goofy, but also pretty funny. Most importantly, it had an authentic feel for the island that you just don’t find in Mainland-produced flicks like Just Go With It or Maui Heat.
Anyway, Kohne’s making a new movie now–a thriller set in early 1970s Maui called Kuleana. I wrote about it back in November, but a lot’s probably happened since. This Tuesday, the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce (MNHCoC) invited Kohne to talk story on Kuleana at the Maui Tropical Plantation. There will also be a ton of food, but mostly, you should go because Kohne is a funny guy who knows how to make a good movie.
The talk takes place at 5:30pm, and the cost is $15 for MNHCoC members, $20 for non-members. Those wishing to attend should RSVP by Sunday, Sept. 7. For more info or to RSVP, go to Mnhcoc.org/events.
