Food and art join with vigor this Saturday at the Second Annual Empty Bowl Project, which will be held at Star Noodle on Kupohi Street in Lahaina. It’s an opportunity for you to help in a bid to raise money to stave off the very serious issue of hunger on Maui. Proceeds from the event will go to Maui Food Bank and Hale Mahaolu.
Four hundred of the aptly named “empty bowls,” handcrafted by the Maui Organization of the Ceramic Arts, will be sold for $25 each. Buy one and you get to fill it with all the fixins at the noodle bar, designed by none other than Maui’s Top Chef and James Beard Award nominee Sheldon Simeon. He will have his signature Star Noodle dishes, including Buckwheat Soba, Hapa Ramen and Star Udon, ready to fill your bowl, along with all the toppings and veggies to maximize your noodle experience.
“The bowl you purchase is a keepsake to remind you of all the ’empty bowls’ in the world, and all proceeds collected from the bowl purchase will be donated to the Maui Food Bank and Hale Mahaolu,” said Kaala Buenconsejo of Star Noodle. “Be there when the gates open! Bowls sold out in the first hour at last year’s event.”
What’s more, all your favorite Star Noodle dishes like Garlic Noodles, Nori Chicken, Pork Buns, Veggie Buns, Miso Salmon, Scallop Shots, Yakitori Sticks (chicken or beef) and Pohole Salad will also be served. For beverages, there will be elegant cocktails in their lounge for you to pair with your bowl of noodles as well as their exquisite wine, beer and sakes. Select sweets will also be available. Live entertainment under the stars will electrify the event’s outdoor, street fair-like atmosphere.
But the fun doesn’t stop there. Sheldon and his Star Noodle crew will also unveil their new food truck–named “Starstruck”–along with a number of dishes for you to sample. Empty Bowl memento tees will also be for sale.
Empty Bowl Projects have connected artists and eaters to raise awareness and millions of dollars for world hunger throughout the U.S. and Canada. All the events are independently produced in their communities.
