For those of you who can’t get enough of the new book The Three-Year Swim Club–the story of Coach Soichi Sakamoto and his ditch kids who went from Pu‘unene poverty in the 1930s to international swimming glory, which we discussed in our Nov. 5, 2015 cover story “Maui’s Swimming Legends”–you can watch author Julie Checkoway speak about the book in a 50-minute video on C-SPAN.
“They were out-pacing Olympians within their first three months,” Checkoway said during her Oct. 29, 2015 appearance at Vroman’s Bookstore in Pasadena, California. “It’s a very improbable story, it really is. A rise from the ditches, really, of Maui–from tremendous poverty–to tremendous triumph, not just in the pool. But in the culture, in society, to American citizenship.”
In the video, Checkoway speaks about the book for the first 30 minutes, and answers questions for the remainder. Click here to watch the video.
