[ECLECTIC MUSIC] There’s something romantic and grand about big bands. Maybe it’s the full sound of so many instruments playing together, maybe it’s the sight of the musicians in suits and ties and (for the women, mostly) cocktail dresses—maybe it’s the smooth vocalist crooning cool, timeless tunes that recall an era of tremendous nighttime class and refinery. Maybe it’s the timbale. I dunno. But it seems the era of big bands has mostly passed. Although thankfully, some kids are still keeping it alive—and fresh—in Portland. Pink Martini is a delightful—yes, delightful—and hip mini-orchestra of 10-12 like-minded, internationally flavored, eclectic music-loving folks who make it okay to reminisce for a time you don’t really remember. Tickets: $35, $40. Call 242-7469.
