Motown Royalty
Sunday (August 15), 7pm, Events Lawn, MACC, $35 / $50 / $65 / $85 / $125
If funky doo-wop were a dish, it’d definitely be a dessert. And if that’s so, the two historic Motown acts headlining this Sunday at the MACC are not mere toppings, they’re the main scoop. The Temptations (a 1960 “super group” merger between The Primes and The Distants) and The Four Tops (originally The Four Aims, composed of friends from Michigan’s Pershing and Northern high schools), both got their start in Detroit during the birth of Motown. With innumerable hits that have spanned the decades, these groups are among the most successful in music history. But have all these guys really been rockin’ for half a century? Well, not exactly. Here’s the skinny: The Temptations, during their “Classic Five” era, featured Melvin Franklin, Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams and David Ruffin. Today, Williams is the only original member remaining, with Ron Tyson,Terry Weeks, Joe Herndon and Bruce Williamson (all joining the group since the ’90s) completing the modern lineup. As with The Temptations, The Four Tops have but one surviving original—Abdul “Duke” Fakir—and Roquel Payton, Theo Peoples and Ronne McNeir fill in for members who have since passed. But I digress. These groups are so beloved, I think fans (past, present and future) will agree they’d love to see them continue on for another 50 years. The important thing is to bring along your boogie shoes and bring your weekend to a soulfully sweet close. 242-7469, mauiarts.org
