[CAMPAIGN EVENTS] In the 2004 Hawai`i Democratic Presidential Caucuses, presidential contender and U.S. Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D, Ohio) actually won Maui County—beating out such luminaries as Howard Dean, Joe Lieberman and even Senator John Kerry, who later distinguished himself by running a miserable, utterly pointless campaign against incumbent President George W. Bush. Now in the midst (hard to believe, isn’t it?) of another presidential race, the unapologetically liberal Kucinich has come back to his base for a series of speeches and fundraisers. For $25, you can hear Kucinich at a noontime luncheon at Cafe O Lei in the Dunes. For those who would like to donate a bit more to his campaign ($250 per person, actually), at 5 p.m. you can shmooze the congressman at a 64-acre Waiehu home while Steve Grimes and the Mojo Gumbo Band plays tunes and the guy who invented the Gardenburger brand (no, I’m not kidding) serves grinds. And for those who don’t want to spend a dime but still want to hear Kucinich talk about his plans for the nation should he get elected, at 7 p.m he’ll speak at Maui Community College’s Pa`ina Cafeteria (sponsored by Maui Peace Action, the MCC Peace Club and the Hawai`i Institute for Human Rights). Did I mention Kucinich’s insanely intelligent/progressive/hot wife Elizabeth will accompany him to all events? For more info on the Cafe O Lei thing, call Lance Holter at 579-9442; for the evening fundraiser, call 878-8015; and for the MCC appearance, call 573-3255. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
