MAUI HANDS ARTIST KERI MEYER – Maui Hands brings you a December to remember. Enjoy a variety of featured artists island-wide for the whole month. WAILEA WINE AND FOOD FESTIVAL – Swirl, sip and savor as Wailea celebrates the vino. Wailea’s Four Seasons Resort Maui, the Fairmont Kea Lani, Wailea Beach Marriott Resort and Grand Wailea join forces. This year the signature beneficiary is the Maui Culinary Academy. Hundreds of spirits from 65 wineries around the world, resort cuisine and eight Master Sommeliers will have the island buzzin’. THE KATINAS – The notion of mixing family with business has worked for The Katinas for more than two decades. Their musical influences range from praise and worship to urban gospel. Brothers Joe, James, John, Sam and Jesse make up The Katinas, and their debut album landed them on the charts. Destiny, their second album, would prove continued success on Christian radio stations, helping them earn seven Dove Award nominations. AC/DCEMBER – 97.3 K-Rock presents AC/DCember 2012. It doubles as a benefit for Layla Sheikh and tribute to hard rock and heavy metal royalty AC/DC. Hosted by Power Up Comedy’s Chino LaForge and Next Level Theatre Productions’ Rachel Deboer, it features performances by I Want Candy, Annie and The Orfinz, Simply Twisted with Jamie Gallo, Clay Mortensen, Vince Esquire, Brenton Keith, Pete Sebastian and more. A MAUI FISH-MAS – In honor of the governor’s proclamation naming Dec. 1-9, 2012 the “Week for the Animals,” Maui Ocean Center is celebrating “A Maui FISH-mas.” Throughout the month of December, children and adults can enjoy holiday crafts, special presentations and festive trinkets on sale from the center’s gift shop. REMEMBERING PEARL HARBOR – On this, the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, the Story of Hawaii Museum will present Maui author and war historian Deborah C. Pike. Attendees can also view the museum’s recently expanded World War II display, which includes USO pamphlets, original newspaper headlines, artifacts from the Japanese military, Rising Sun flags, senninriki and printed propaganda. There is also an original photo of the admirals of the Combined Japanese Fleet that was taken weeks before the Pearl Harbor attack at Iwakimi Naval Base in Japan. TWO NIGHTS OF GHETTO FUNK – Beats Bazaar and Cultivate are presenting two nights of ghetto funk music, fashion and soul this Friday, Dec. 7th (at Casanova) and Saturday, Dec. 8 (at Longhi’s). ‘SMOKEY JOE’S CAFE’ – ProArts presents Smokey Joe’s Cafe, a revue of novelty pop songs by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. The award-winning musical features 39 hits, ranging from rock ‘n roll to blues and jazz. “Jailhouse Rock,” “Hound Dog” and “Stand By Me” are just a few of the classics heard during the lively Broadway production. Director Aly Cardinalli both choreographs and performs. Opening night is Dec. 7 and the show plays until Dec. 23, 2012; Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 3pm. MELVIN SEALS AND THE JERRY GARCIA BAND – Dancing Dog presents Melvin Seals and The Jerry Garcia Band at Mulligan’s on the Blue. NA MELE O MAUI – Committed to cultural preservation and the perpetuation of Hawaiian mele, language and arts, the Na Mele O Maui Song and Art Competition has been around four decades. Now the Ka‘anapali Beach Resort presents the 40th Annual Na Mele O Maui 2012. This year the theme is Ka Ho‘oilina Leo a Ho’opi’i Brothers (the Vocal Legacy of the Ho’opi’i Brothers) and will honor the works of the late Solomon Ho’opi’i and still living Richard Ho’opi’i. In the K-12th grade competition, students will be critiqued on musical competence, language proficiency and interpretation, stage presence and all-around enthusiasm. Art entrees will reflect the events, stories and places depicted in songs by the Ho’opi’i Brothers. There will be a special performance by Richard Ho’opi’i. Free (donations requested). 9am-1:30pm. FESTIVAL OF HARPS – Maui’s finest harpists, along with the Festival Harp Ensemble, is playing the Festival of Harps 2012. MAKANA – The Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is partnering with slack key guitarist Makana for a Maui Memorial Medical Center Foundation fundraiser.
