True Story: When I first heard of The English Beat, I thought they were a band of guerilla warriors who attacked typos. To my dismay, I learned that they aren’t, in fact, a band of brave editors protecting the populace from bad grammar. But they are a pretty awesome band that fuses ska, pop, soul, reggae and punk. Their lyrics cover a range of topics including love, unity and politics. And get this—they formed in Birmingham in 1978, during a time of high unemployment and social upheaval. Kinda makes you wonder what kind of music is being made now, right? Hopefully it’s as killer as The English Beat. I think their name comes from the fact they are a) English; and b) they’ve got sick beats. But, let me hold on to my pipedreams of revolutionary proofreaders, will you? 661-9913 or mauitheatre.com
