[MUSIC] Call it kismet, but a legendary band that has been around for three decades—The Dirty Dozen Brass Band (pictured above) will be playing on my birthday! Three decades! Brassy! Dirty? Hmm… But anyway, The Dirty Dozen combines funk, jazz, gospel and soul with the brass band tradition and jazz funeral dirges of New Orleans. They’ve also collaborated with Elvis Costello, Dave Matthews and Modest Mouse. And tonight they’re performing with Grammy-winning Dixie Hummingbirds, who’ve been around since 1928—not so much like me—but have been the inspiration of countless soul artists, earning the title “The Iron Men of Gospel.” Ahh… I couldn’t ask for a better birthday present. Now who’s gonna jump outta the cake? Tickets: $10, 20, 30. Call 242-SHOW. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
