[MUSIC] Normally when we think of Canada, what comes to mind first are Mounties and people saying, “eh?”—or is that just me? The point is, you don’t automatically think of kickass skaters and bombass rappers. But Canada is home to a skate group called the Red Dragons that—and I hope I’m not offending anyone here—could be described as similar to the Z-Boys. You know, just a bunch of hardcore skater dudes known and respected throughout the skater community.
So some of the fellas involved with the Red Dragons came together to form Swollen Members. They have a hip hop/rap/rock/funky beat going on that reminds me of a new and improved Cypress Hill.
Their rhymes on “Too Hot” are close to my heart, as they speak on drinking and getting crazy. (You can check it out for yourself on their web page at www.swollenmembers.com) Apparently, the folks at DC Shoe Company agree with me because they sponsor them. Although they have yet to take over MTV, you can already find their music in some popular skate and snowboard videos.
They’ve become the rage in underground music and now Bamp Project is bringing them here to Maui. You may have already seen some flyers or the ad within these pages displaying the skull and cross axes.
“People are getting the impression that it’s going to be a rock show,” said promoter Aubry Boutin. “These guys are definitely hip-hop. So some people may be surprised but I’m sure they’ll have a great time anyway.”
I agree. I already dig their sound and expect it to be a rad and rowdy show. Everybody who’s anybody is going to be there. Which means I’m going. Tickets: $20. [HEIDI KING]
