THE DOORS – Following the 1971 death of Jim Morrison, the surviving members of The Doors continued to record and tour for two years before disbanding. In that time, they produced two albums, Other Voices (1971) and Full Circle (1972), with guitarist Robby Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek on vocals. Krieger and Manzarek reunited in 2002 with a band first called The Doors of the 21st Century, though through the course of legal disputes with Doors drummer John Densmore, the name has changed several times. They now tour as Manzarek-Krieger.
LYNYRD SKYNYRD – In 1977, a Convair 240 crashed in Gillsburg, Mississippi, killing Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Steve Gaines, his sister and backup singer Cassie Gaines and lead vocalist Ronnie Van Zant, as well as the band’s assistant road manager and the pilot and co-pilot of the aircraft. The band’s album Street Survivors had been released just three days prior, and featured a photograph of the band—including Steve Gaines—engulfed in flames. At the behest of Gaines’s widow, MCA Records soon thereafter replaced the cover (though for a deluxe edition re-issued 30 years later, it was restored). In all, 18 musicians are credited as former or current members of Lynyrd Skynyrd.
QUEEN – After Freddie Mercury lost his battle with AIDS in 1991, guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor continued to perform as Queen (along with bassist John Deacon until his retirement in 1998), often billed with a guest vocalist. Notable fill-ins run the gamut, and include Luciano Pavarotti, Wyclef Jean and Brittany Spears. From 2004-’09, the band toured with Paul Rogers (formerly of Bad Company) as Queen + Paul Rogers.
