[HAWAIIAN MUSIC] The 15th annual ki ho’alu festival is such a big deal that Mayor Alan Arakawa proclaimed this week “2006 Slack Key Guitar Festival Week” in Maui County. And it’s appropriate, considering the quality and importance of this all-day, free event. Performers include Danny Carvalho, Daniel Ho, Ledward Ka’apana, Michael Ka’awa, David Kahiapo, George Kahumoku, Jr. and gang, Dennis and David Kamakahi, Walter Keale, Makana, Native Hawaiian Band, Ola Hou, Pali, Jeff Peterson, Kalani Smythe, Paul Togjoka, and more, with special guest Melveen Leed. Where else can you go, catch a full day of Hawaiian music and culture, and not spend any of your hard-earned money? (If you’re like me and just have to hemorrhage cash, stop by the fresh leis, local food and Hawaiian arts & crafts booths). [CN]
