[HEALTH] I haven’t yet read Michele Simon’s Appetite for Profit, but I’m guessing the gist goes something like this: food manufacturers, with the approval of the FDA (themselves undoubtedly ex-food manufacturers) are some of the most greedy, unethical and selfish capitalists the world has ever known, content to sacrifice the bodies and minds of our population for profit. The evidence is everywhere—should we decide to wake up and notice it. Americans, accustomed to eating as rapidly and thoughtlessly as possible, routinely ingest harmful and often lethal doses of sugars, chemicals, preservatives, pesticides and animal byproducts (which often include ever-so-tasty portions of animal steroids, antibiotics and who knows what else). The net result of this advertising and quick-fix driven food culture is a society of obese, diseased, depressed, confused, temperamental, disconnected and, worst of all, often unkind individuals. We are what we eat, and if we decide to abuse our bodies and minds, it should come as no surprise that we tend to treat each other and our environment just as poorly. That’s my sermon; for a decidedly more researched and polished version it is highly recommended that you attend Ms. Simon’s. She’ll be appearing in person at the Cameron Center Auditorium June 11th at 7 p.m. as part of a free monthly Vegetarian Society of Hawaii program. If anyone is still wondering what’s wrong with our society, our children, or our selves, this will be a great opportunity to receive some of those answers.
