Chef Paris Nabavi of Sangrita Grill + Cantina recently donated $1,200 to Lahainaluna High School’s Agriculture Program, teacher Keith Ideoka and his students. The money was generated during a Cinco Di Mayo Day event at Sangrita Grill + Cantina, located at the Fairway Shops in Ka’anapali.
Nabavi, owner of Sangrita Grill + Cantina and the former Cilantro Grill, gave the $1,200 in the Lahainaluna garden on May 14. For the second year in a row, a portion of the proceeds of Nabavi’s Cinco de Mayo celebration benefited the Lahainaluna High School Agricultural Program. This year’s donation was twice the amount of last year’s gift, which was raised at Cilantro.
“Funds raised will take our students to the Hawaii State Future Farmers of America Conference, where students experience leadership training, state level skills competitions, and more,” said Ideoka. “We will also purchase basic agriculture supplies for our students such as seeds, fertilizer, potting soil, pots, and garden tools that are essential to learning.”
Nabavi also supports the Maui Food Bank by donating the proceeds from a series of Persian cooking classes held regularly at his home’s outdoor kitchen. After a recent class, Nabavi donated $3,200 to Maui Food Bank, including a matching grant from the Makana Aloha Foundation. His current initiatives also include partnering with Maui School Garden Network to sponsor organic seed for school gardens throughout the island of Maui, Molokai and Lanai.
