Now this is pop music—no glitter-splattered MTV videos or bisexual backup dancers. Rickie Lee Jones’s songcraft is pop before it became synonymous with 13-year-old girls with pink-streaked hair. Jones is a unique pop singer who sports an indie spirit that makes her tunes speak with a strong inner voice that feels as good to relate to as it sounds. I’m the kind of person (and I suspect there are lots of us out there) who will occasionally discover a breathtakingly fun, inspiring song and keep it on repeat until my iPod cries with boredom. Awarded my prestigious “Looped” award are Jones’s famous tracks “Chuck E’s in Love” and “Making Whoopee.” That commendation alone should be enough, but I suppose I’ll also mention that her singer-songwriter work earned her Grammy awards for Best New Artist, Best Jazz Performance and Best Pop Album. Tonight, Mauians luck out at the MACC, with Jones’s only Hawai’i performance. 808-242-7469, www.mauiarts.org
