This is pop music. No- there are no glitter-splattered MTV videos or bisexual backup dancers…this is pop music before it became synonymous with 13 year old girls and pink streaked hair. Rickie Lee Jones is a unique pop singer who sports an indie spirit that makes her tunes speak with a strong inner voice that feels good to relate to. I’m the kind of person (and I suspect there are lots of us out there) who will occasionally discover a truly breathtakingly fun, inspiring song and then listen to it on repeat until my ipod is crying from boredom. I would award her famous hits “Chuck E’s in Love” and “Making Whoopee” this prestigious “Looped” award and that commendation alone should be enough for anyone, but I suppose I’ll also mention that her singer-songwriter work earned her a Grammy for Best New Artist, Best Jazz Performance, and Best Pop Album. The MACC will host her only performance in Hawaii on Thursday, June 10th at 7:30 pm. Call 242-show or visit mauiarts.org for tickets, which run from $25-$65.
