If calculating by the cliche, three-minute (Pop) “rule,” Requests has kept us rocking for 3,504,000 songs straight. That’s 20 years, if you don’t already know, or want to do the backwards math. Two decades of the island’s only legitimate record store surviving the days of big-box booms and the most colossal #fail of the music industry to date? Score! That’s a good, long run. But the business of mind-expanding (soul-uplifting/friend-making/booty-shaking…) is a marathon, not a sprint—and fans (as you should be) can only hope this is but the beginning of many more years to come. While we’ve been blessed by a few notable former Requests-takers like Andrew, Jay, Justin—whom we should no doubt fondly remember and reconnect with—let’s be sure to celebrate our current curators of relics and the rest, the ever-knowledgeable/lovable/admirable Boomshot, Brendan, Jay-P and Marc. And I’d be remiss not to mention owner Vince Mendez, the venerable madman who started it all (first doing business at the Swap Meet, before opening up shop on Lower Main and Mill Street). And who better than Maui music giants Gomega, to get our no ka ‘oi music store’s birthday bash going, during this month’s Wailuku First Friday festivities? (Which BTW hosts a slew of other nifty attractions, like an Oktoberfest Beer Garden and free screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show see our Da Kine Calendar for more.) www.mauivents.com /1stFridayWailuku@gmail.com / “Wailuku First Friday” on Facebook.com
