Friday (October 1) 6-8pm, Market & Main Streets, Wailuku, Free
If calculating by the cliche, three-minute (Pop) “rule,” Requests has kept us rocking for 3,504,000 songs straight.* That’s 20 years, if you don’t (already know, or) want to do the backwards math. Two decades of the island’s only legitimate record store surviving the days of big box booms and the most colossal #fail of the music industry to date? Score! That’s a good, long run. But the business of mind-expanding (soul-uplifting/friend-making/booty-shaking…) is a marathon, not a sprint — and fans (as you should be) can only hope this is but the beginning of many more years to come. While we’ve been blessed by a few notable former Requests-takers like Andrew, Jay, and Justin — whom we should no doubt fondly reminisce about (and reconnect with), now more than ever — lets be sure to celebrate our current curators of relics and the rest, the ever-knowledgeable/lovable/admirable Boomshot, Brendan, Jay-P and Marc. And, I’d be remiss not to mention owner Vince Mendez, the venerable madman who started it all (first doing business at the Swap Meet, before opening up shop on Lower Main and Mill Street). And who better than Maui music giants Gomega, to get our no ka ‘oi music store birthday bash going, during this months Waiuku First Friday festivities?** 1stFridayWailuku@gmail.com / “Wailuku First Friday” on Facebook.com
*Or if Requests were a person [in American Samoa, Guam, Khazakstan, Micronesia, the Northern Mariana Islands, Oman, Pakistan, Palau, Sri Lanka, Tajikistan, the United Arab Emirates, or — of course — the Unites States; and sometimes Cameroon, Egypt, or the U.S. Virgin Islands (everywhere else breeds long-seasoned shooters)], they’d still be a year away from legally drunk. Further evidence that while Requests has been around awhile, it hasn’t been long enough.
** On that note, if you are of legal drinking age, enjoy a hana hou of the Wailuku First Friday beer garden (5-9pm) — back by popular demand — brought to you by Maui Recycling. Also, unlock your diaries and warm up your vocal chords for the poetry slam at Gallerie Ha (cash prize!), and pack some toast, rice and playing cards for free screening of The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the ‘Iao Theater.
READ MORE ABOUT REQUESTS: Whoa?! Speaking of anniversaries/time flying, I can’t believe it’s been over a year since my first MauiTime cover story! How did I luck out with (#1: this job, and #2:) a great subject like Requests? And, (#3:) the skills of Sean Hower and Megan Baker photographing/filming/editing all the great visual content (you’ll find when you follow the link)?!
