WINE
I’m always up for a drink with Master Sommelier Patrick Okubo who will be highlighting the wallflower wine Cab Franc at Makena Beach Resort this Thursday, Sept. 19. Even better, they’ve cleverly called it a “Food & Education” event so you can feel smart while eating and drinking at the Molokini Bar and Grille. You can also plan for an evening of education starting at 6:30pm when Chef Marc McDowell starts the action with a cooking demonstration.
The Cab Franc is most easily seen in wine blends but McDowell and Okubo will present its strong side as a stand-alone varietal that originated in Chinon, France but now is grown all over the world. With Okubo’s guidance, you should be able to discern distinct attitudes in the Cabernet Franc of berries, spices, herbs, tobacco and violets.
You can also taste the old world in the Damine De Pallus “Les Pensees De Pallus” Cabernet Franc from Chinon with black tea smoked quail. Next, the Chilean Peñalolén Cabernet Franc–a cool-climate Casablanca Valley example with aromas of red currant and berries–will be served with Chilean Tacos Carnitas loaded with bell peppers, onions and fresh cilantro. Lastly, you can enjoy lamb sliders topped with bleu cheese and red onions with the California Napa Valley Farrier Wine Company’s Presshouse Red Blend.
The evening is just $40 but reservations are recommended and seating is limited. Call 808-875-5888 or visit Makenaresortmaui.com/dining for more information.

ART
Paia Tattoo Parlor is hosting an art show reception on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 8pm. The show features the latest book by Vincent Goudreau. Goudreau’s Recordings of an Immigrant is based on the journey of Juan Aquino from Guatemala to the United States. Small editions of seven different images were made at artist Tania Aren’s Paia Print Lab, one for each book chapter. The book explores the sordid tale of modern immigration that’s steeped in poverty, violence and corruption. Call 808-579-8515 for more information.
