Since the dawn of time, “party at the pavilion” has meant that [insert Uncle of choice] has gotta wake up with the roosters to stake out dibs on da choicest spot at Iao Valley’s Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens. But henceforth, “party at the pavilion” has a glitzy new meaning—the MACC’s newly-completed, $13 million Yokouchi Pavilion. If your hippocampus is on vacation, I’ll remind you that two weeks ago the Pavilion’s inaugural weekend began with Elton John and ended with NAS and Damian Marley. Apparently, this wasn’t quite good enough, so the MACC’s making it more official this weekend with a free for all (read: free and public) celebration, culminating with a grand finale fireworks show. No local-style party is complete without ono grinds (free popcorn, chow fun and soft drinks) and bouncy castles, plus you can tour the new facilities like Morgado Hall, overlooking Kahului Harbor. Maui musicians, halau hula and school groups will perform under the illuminated, pedestaled pyramid that now crowns the amphitheater’s outdoor stage (see if you can count all 288 glass panels). So be like Uncle Insert and get there early to stake out a good spot for you and your ‘ohana. 242-2787; mauiarts.org
