AKAKU STORYTELLING WORKSHOP – Do you have a story to tell? Take part in this free community workshop that’s led by filmmaker Catherine Bauknight and learn about using film and video to document cultural perspectives. Bauknight produced, co-directed and shot the award-winning film Hawaiʻi–A Voice for Sovereignty. She has worked as a photojournalist and professional photographer for the last 20 years, and her work has been featured in international publications including Time, Newsweek, People, the New York Times, USA Today and Rolling Stone. This workshop will explore the role of a filmmaker in documenting a community, as well as camera techniques, audio and shot composition. Open to the public. Free. 6-7:30pm. Akaku Center (333 Dairy Rd., Kahului); 808-871-5554; akaku.org.
‘JOURNEY OF THE UNIVERSE’ – Apparently, Albert Einstein once said, “Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I’m not sure about the former.” Guess not everyone’s born a genius. But I digress… here’s a chance to learn about our mysterious universe at a screening of the Emmy-winning documentary Journey of the Universe. The film covers topics ranging from the Big Bang, the human genome and humanity’s relationship to the Earth. The film will be followed by a discussion with the film’s writer/producer Mary Evelyn Tucker and Dr. Pualani Kanaka‘ole Kanahele. Kanahele is a Hawaiian cultural practitioner, leading Hawaiian creation myth scholar and award-winning author. This event is Part Two of the “Man/Woman and Nature Series: Four public conversations on the relationship of humans to the natural world,” presented by the MACC and Ala Kukui. $10. 6pm. McCoy Studio, Maui Arts & Cultural Center (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 808-242-SHOW; mauiarts.org.
HANA RECYCLING – If you have junk in the trunk, why not recycle it this weekend in Hana? The Community Work Day Program, with support from the County of Maui, has organized a three-day recycling event at the Hana landfill for items that the facility doesn’t accept. You can bring stuff like scrap metal, appliances, car batteries and tires (there’s a $5 fee for each tire you recycle) to their staging area at the landfill. Then CWD takes your stuff to the proper recycling facilities. But they won’t take cars, furniture, propane tanks, computers, TVs or electronics. Elderly and disabled residents can call CWD for help transporting items to the staging area. Call or email CWD for more info. Free. July 26-28, 8am-2:30pm. Hana Landfill (35 Hana Hwy.); 808-877-2524; info@cwdhawaii.org.

Think back to the days before color TV, when life was in black and white. The event will feature five DJs, six VJs, interactive and performance art. The dress code is black and white, and the best costume will win a prize. The Art=Mixx folks have a lot of surprises up their sleeves, so you’ll have to stop by and experience it for yourself. Free. 10am-2pm. Hui No’eau Visual Arts Center (2841 Baldwin Ave., Makawao).
CUT CHEMIST – Cut Chemist, internationally renowned electronic music artist, is bringing his sound experiments to Paia for one night only. He first entered the music scene as a founding member of rap group Jurassic 5 and Grammy-winning Latin funk outfit Ozomatli. In 2006, “What’s the Altitude,” a song off of his first solo release, became one of the most viewed videos on YouTube at the time and helped put him on the map as a solo artist. Since then, his sound has been evolving as he continues to push the boundaries of live DJing. His 2010 concept mix, Sound of the Police, showcases his passion for Ethiopian, Colombian, Sudanese and Afro-Brazilian sounds. The name Cut Chemist does well to describe this artist’s skill in putting together diverse musical styles and creating something altogether original. Not to mention that he resembles a mad scientist at work in his live performances. $25 pre-sale, $30 at door. 9pm. Charley’s (142 Hana Hwy., Paia); 808-579-8085; cutmaui.eventbrite.com; cutchemist.com.
