Puppeteer Jim Henson (1936-1990) was so progressive, it’s possible he’s from another planet. From Muppets to Fraggels and more, he’s helped us revel in rainbow connections, asking “what’s on the other side?” and reminded us to “dance our cares away [and] let the music play.”
In the late 1960s, Henson was commissioned by Children’s Television Workshop to pioneer an inspired children’s program for public television. The result was the seminal show Sesame Street; still going strong since 1969. (Fun fact: Originally, Henson performed the characters of then roving reporter Kermit, game-show host Guy Smiley, and Ernie.)
This weekend, today’s keiki (or keiki at heart) have six chances to see their favorite characters live onstage at Sesame Street Live “1-2-3 Imagine! with Elmo & Friends.”
For lovers and dreamers, the show features characters like Big Bird and Abby Cadabby, with imaginative song and dance stories including Ernie captaining the high seas, Elmo boogeying in an African forest, and tracks with titles like “I Don’t Want to Live on the Moon,” “She’ll Be Comin’ ‘Round the Mountain” and “Surfin’ Safari.”
Understanding the importance of capturing keiki memories, one cool thing Sesame Street Live allows is candid photography. But if you want to guarantee a good shot, you can opt for the Sunny Seat package, which includes front row seats and a pre-show meet and greet with two characters.
PS: If you need the (unlikely) help of hyping your kids up before hand, or a decompression chamber activity afterward, download printable coloring sheets at sesamestreetlive.com/groups/activities. [242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org]
