If being an MC was like going to school, Pato Banton would have a Masters degree. Or at least that’s the way he puts it in his song “Don’t Sniff Coke.” This reggae artist sure doesn’t need any coke to keep him up and running at all hours: Pato, the name given to him by his step-father, is also a Jamaican owl (nocturnal, of course), and it suits him just fine. Banton hails from London, and spent a good bit of his childhood guarding the door at his step-father’s underground parties. The nine-year old bouncer became an MC in his teens, and his career skyrocketed from there. His upbeat music, thumping reggae beats, playful lyrics and all-around positivity will have you dancing and laughing into the wee hours. Equally infectious outfit Breath of Fire opens. [Sierra Brown]
