HAVE AN ICE DAY: Saturday & Sunday (November 13 & 14), 11am-1pm, Lahaina Cannery Mall, Free
Few mediums are more ephemeral and unforgiving than ice; the sculptors thereof subjecting themselves to certain heartbreak (the key word, unfortunately, being break). The challenge of ice sculpting in cold weather climates is tough enough (see the video embedded at bottom), but take that competition to the Tropics, and it’s like trying to create a sidewalk chalk mural in a monsoon or oil painting underwater. But, if Hawaii’s only annual ice sculpting competition is to be held anywhere, at Maui’s only fully enclosed, air conditioned mall seems like the best bet. Thus, Lahaina Cannery Mall will again host their International Ice Sculpting Exhibition and Competition, drawing artists from across the state and as far away as Japan. [Interesting tidbit: Sapporo (yes, like the beer), the largest city on the island of Hokkaido, is (also) world famous for the giant ice sculptures at their Yuki Matsuri, or Sapporo Snow Festival; held annually since the 1950s.) Wielding saws, picks, drills and chisels, sculptors will showcase their skills on Saturday during a freestyle exhibition, and on Sunday will engage in a timed contest for cash and prizes — transforming 300lb blocks of ice into masterpieces. Since one of the pleasures of such temporary art is witnessing it, you’re welcome to ogle all you like. 808-661-5304; lahainacannery.com / @lahainacannery on Twitter
