[FILM] I’m not usually one to fall for the latest popular new-age theory on how to live my life. Too many of these “alternative spiritualities” seem based on some half-cocked scheme, like life’s big secret actually comes from telepathic geckos from outer space or something. But every once in awhile, some outside-of-the-box theories resonate in my desolate soul. It’s usually stuff that just feels right, or gives me a different perspective that I instantly relate to, but had never consciously thought of before. Peaceful Warrior is one of those films that did this for me. Of all people, Jim Carrey—the facially gymnastic comedic actor—agrees. “When you hear the truth, it sounds familiar,” he said. “Like seeing a reflection of something you already possess. This film is that clear and simple reflection. I enjoyed every moment.” And this is also sure to ring true for fans of the similarly inspiring spiritual-mind-trip flick What the Bleep, whose own associate producer, Straw Weisman, said Peaceful Warrior is “Like Rocky for the soul!” Based on Dan Millman’s best-selling memoir, The Way of Peaceful Warrior, the movie revolves around the story of a young, ambitious male gymnast, as he re-examines his life and learns to live in the moment after meeting an enigmatic gas-station guru who challenges his notions of achievement and victory for an ideology that favors consciousness over intelligence, and spiritual strength over physical prowess. Stars Scott Mechlowicz as Dan Millman, Nick Nolte as Socrates, Tim DeKay as Coach Garrick and Amy Smart as Joy. Also playing Friday, July 28. 120 min. [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
