CAREGIVER’S COURSE – Following the tragic Newtown Elementary School shooting, mental illness has been a big topic of discussion. That’s why National Alliance on Mental Illness will present a 12-week course for family and friends who must care for those with some sort of mental illness. Starting this Thursday and running the next 11 weeks, NAMI will review various mental illness diagnosis, provide up-to-date information about medication, give assistance for the emotional/physical well-being of caregivers and provide tools and resources for mentally ill individuals and their families. HAWAIIAN MOONLIGHT CONCERT – Join the Maui Historical Society for an evening under the “Hawaiian Moonlight.” This month features island favorite George Kahumoku Jr. and friends. Proceeds will benefit the Bailey House Museum. Bring your blanket, cooler and ohana to enjoy music at the historic museum. KIHEI FOURTH FRIDAY – Kihei Fourth Friday is back for it’s second Fourth Friday Town Party (say that three times!) ONE HOT WINTER’S NIGHT – Slip on your sassy stilettos and warm up at “One Hot Winter’s Night.” Maui OnStage presents the second annual burlesque show with proceeds benefiting the theater company. Following last year’s sell out performance, Kit Kat Club, Jim Oxboro and host Charlie Dungans will bring the heat. NICKODEMUS – Beats Bazaar and OM Concerts presents NICKODEMUS. For more than 10 years in New York City, the “funktronica maestro” combines Afro-Cuban-Latin “funktronica” with global beats. THE SHINNEN ENKAI – The Japanese Cultural Society is celebrating Shinnen Enkai, welcoming the new Year of the Snake. The evening will include guest appearances by 2011 KZOO Grand Champion Tevita Apina, Maui Taiko and a special tribute to Kay Fukumoto (pictured) and her extensive work in Taiko as the recipient of the 2013 Maui Nihon Bunka Award. MAUI MOTOWN PROM – Jungle to Jungle is inviting everyone to groove in honor of soul. ‘KULANIHAKOI: LIVING WATERS’ – Experience the stunning collaboration of Hokulani Holt, Keali‘i Reichel, Pali Ahue, Ulalia Woodside, Kauhilonohonua Padilla and Robert Ke‘ano Ka‘upu in the presentation of Kūlanihāko‘i: Living Waters. The show uses hula and contemporary Hawaiian storytellers to explore the relationship of water to life and land. FLEETWOOD’S FULL MOON PARTY – What better way to spend the evening than by howling at the full moon from Fleetwood’s rooftop? Here’s your chance to experience a night of mysticism on Fleetwood’s plush couches. The moonlit lounge will be home to tarot card readers, massage relaxation and talk story sessions with the president of the Maui Astronomy Club. WHALE PHOTO TRIBUTE – In conjunction with whale season and the launch of 2013 Maui Whale Festival, Pacific Whale Foundation will host a gala reception celebrating the opening of the 2013 “Photo Tribute to the Whales” exhibit. EBB & FLOW – Take a moment to tap into your classy self for an evening of fine music. Ebb & Flow Ensemble performs Arnold Schoenberg’s “String Quartet #2” in F sharp minor for soprano and string quartet. Have no idea what that means? Don’t fret! A group of very talented musicians (Rachel Schutz, soprano, Ignace Jang and Helen Liu on violins, Steven Flanter, viola, Joanna Morrison-Pernela, cello and Robert Pollock, Maui composer/pianist) will play intricately written music. The musicians hail from three different islands and will perform a soprano and string quartet inspired by a poem by Robinson Jeffers. For the audience’s visual pleasure, local artist Tomas Belsky and videographer Peter Swanzy will feature images of a painting inspired by the piece. $28. 5pm. ELAINE RYAN – Born in Waterford, Ireland, songstress Elaine Ryan floats between Vancouver, B.C. and Maui. Now she’ll release her full length album Sunsets & Twilights while premiering her “When the Wind Blows Kona,” produced and directed by Emmy award winning cinematographer Jess Craven. A result of Ryan’s work with producer Winston Hauschild, the album blends folk-acoustic genre with upbeat pop-rock songs. “When the Wind Blows Kona,” is a tribute to her island home with a danceable surf-pop vibe. $10. 9pm. SOLAR-POWERED GOAT HERDER – The Sustainable Living Institute of Maui and Upcountry Sustainability are hosting an evening with Doug Fine. An investigative journalist, author and solar-powered New Mexican goat herder, Fine will share his struggles and victories in his mission to eliminate 90 percent of petroleum use from his life. The entertaining Q&A strives to create a comic atmosphere while bringing to light a serious environmental issue. Whether it’s how his goats outsmart him, being electrocuted by his solar panels or getting the munchies from the exhaust of his vegetable truck, Fine’s approach make sustainable living easy to digest for all.
