GROUNDATION & THE ABYSSINIANS – Here’s your chance to see Groundation and The Abyssinians with Father Psalms & Rootz Revealerz. Hailing from Northern California, the roots Reggae band Groundation has released more than half a dozen studio albums. Named after a Rastafari holiday, Groundation’s sound fuses hints of dub and Jazz. Sharing the stage with the likes of Don Carlos, Steel Pulse and Rebelution, Groundation continues to forge a path authentic to their roots. Joining them will be The Abyssinians, another prolific Rastafari band. Known best for their album Satta Massagana, they’re notable for incorporating Rastafari doctrine in their music. ‘THE 25TH ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE’ – ProArts in Kihei is proud to present the Tony-winning musical The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, produced and directed by Jonathan Lehman. Six adolescent outsiders, overseen by grown-ups who barely seem to be adults themselves, learn that winning isn’t everything and that losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. The spelling bee is the one place where they can stand out and fit in at the same time. Audience members will be recruited to try their hand at spelling against the “experts.” $25. 7:30pm. NATURAL VIBRATIONS – Polynesian Underground presents Natural Vibrations, otherwise known as Natty Vibes, this Friday at Stella Blues in Kihei. Catch the twilight performance of “Hawaii’s original live party band” whose unique fusion of Reggae and dance party vibes keep fans on their feet. MAUI TOY RUN – Street Bikers United Hawaii, Maui Chapter is presenting their 12th annual Maui Toy Run Motorcycle Parade and Classic Car Show. Take a ride on the wild side with SBU as they parade from Ma’alaea Harbor to Lahaina Cannery Mall (through Front Street) and end at VFW Park in Kihei by 2pm. Following the parade, live music, a keiki zone and food will be available for purchase. Benefiting Toys for Tots, all guests are encouraged to bring a new unwrapped toy or monetary donation. The next day, the Trike Run to Kula Hospital will meet at 9am at Cycle City Maui Harley Davidson. There will be classic cars, bikes and Christmas carols for the patients. HOLIDAY BAZAAR – Women Helping Women is inviting you to do at least part of your holiday shopping at their annual Holiday Bazaar. GINGERBREAD FAMILY FESTIVAL – Easter Seals Hawaii is kicking off a longstanding tradition this Saturday for the first time on Maui. ESH’s Maui Na Hulu Campus will host its first annual Gingerbread Family Festival. Families can order gingerbread kits to either decorate that day or take home. Each kit includes two gingerbread houses, candies, gingerbread men and icing in three colors (red, white and green). Decoration sessions will be split into two groups: a morning session that runs 9:30-11:30am and an afternoon session that runs 12:30-2:30pm. WILLIE KALIKIMAKA – Mele Kalikimaka is the thing to say on a bright Hawaiian Christmas day and who better than Maui’s own Willie K should welcome us all to the holiday season. The Maui Arts and Cultural Center is presents Willie Kalikimaka this Saturday–a festive holiday twist on a traditional phrase. A multiple Na Hoku Hanohano award winner and one of Hawaii’s most versatile entertainers, Willie K will welcome in the holidays local style. VIRR CHRISTMAS RUNS – Valley Isle Road Runners is inviting everyone, members and non-members alike, for a Christmas Mile course or 10K beginning and ending at Wailuku Municipal Parking Lot. For those who prefer a brisk walk or easy run, The Vineyard Street mile course takes you uphill on Vineyard to the cemetery and then back down. The 10K takes you uphill Vineyard to Iao Valley Road, winds uphill, then heads back down to the Municipal Parking Lot (two hour time limit). Participants are invited to bring beach chairs, towels and a dish to share at the potluck following the race. VIRR will accept monetary donations and canned goods for the Maui Food Bank. THE MAUI YOUTH PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA – The Maui Youth Philharmonic Orchestra (MYPO) invites you to its annual Winter Concert on Sunday in the H.P. Baldwin Auditorium at Baldwin High School. There will be student musicians aged 9-17 on strings, percussion and woodwind instruments and the MYPO Brass Ensemble. FIRST LIGHT FILM FESTIVAL – Beginning Wednesday, Dec. 18 and running through Jan. 5, Maui Arts and Cultural Center’s Castle Theater revives the Maui Film Festival FirstLight: Academy Screenings. FirstLight will feature both Hawaii premieres and official submissions for Best Foreign Language Film. The films will feature work from Kate Winslet, Julia Roberts, Meryl Streep, Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson and Amy Adams. Days and times vary with a few holidays excepted.
