CHAMPAGNE AND CHOCOLATE ARTIST RECEPTION WITH MAUI ARTIST ED LANE – Paia’s Turnbull Fine Art invites you “to engage your senses during a delightful evening of ‘Champagne & Chocolate with Ed Lane.’” Gallery owner Christine Turnbull says, “The artwork of Maui artist Ed Lane is widely known as the ‘art of exuberance and the expression of delight’ and we want to celebrate his work with a show opening that is equally lively and vibrant as Ed and his work.” Lane moved to Maui 1994 to become a full time artist (after a successful 36-year career in advertising) and his “trademark use of cadmium red as a base coat with an overlay of a dozen other hues results in glowing landforms and back-lit foliage.” Free. 6-9pm. Turnbull Fine Art (137 Hana Hwy., Paia); 579-9385; turnbullfineart.com
FRIDAY, JAN. 27
JORMA KAUKONEN AND CHRIS SMITHER – Fri., Jan. 27 – Today, Hot Tuna’s one of those blazing bands that young record pickers get hip to thanks to their wicked album art–like the sun-kissed primary hues of First Pull Up, Then Pull Down (1971) and the ultra-pop imagery of The Phosphorescent Rat (1973). Aesthetic allure aside, Hot Tuna’s been rockin’ strong since ‘69. So old-and new-school fans alike can rejoice that Jorma Kaukonen (frontman of Hot Tuna and Jefferson Airplane) is coming to the Maui, joined by acoustic blues master Chris Smither. A Lazar Bear production. Tickets available online, by phone, and at If The Shoe Fits (Wailuku) and Lava Java (Kihei). $28 / $35 / $45 Gold Circle. 6pm doors / 7pm show. Iao Theater (68 N. Market St., Wailuku); 896-4845; lazarbear.com
PAIA FOURTH FRIDAY – Paia merchants keep upping the ante with their monthly Maui Town Party offerings, where goodies, gifts and ono grinds abound. SATURDAY, JAN. 28
SOJA IN CONCERT WITH ANUHEA AND THE GREEN – Many Mauians love local songstress Anuhea ‘cause she’s cool (and “anu” in Hawaiian literally means cool), and likewise can’t get enough The Green (i.e. the band and the you-know-what). Many Mauians also love SOJA (an acronymic name which stands for Soldiers of Jah Army), who are touring on the eve of the release of their latest, Strength to Survive. So, this show’s sure to be jammed and jammin’. But despite all the love, our new album reviewer’s dished some cutting critique–and to read it, all you’ve gotta do is flip to page 27. $40 advance / $50 day-of. 5:30pm show. A&B Amphitheater, MACC (One Cameron Way, Kahului); 242-SHOW (7469); mauiarts.org

This Sun., Mulligan’s honors Burns in their eighth annual Burns Night, with traditional toasts and a special three-course dinner ($29.95), plus rockin’ Celtic music by The Chancers. (PS: Wanna pre-party? Mulligan’s, with Maui Celtic, is also helping bring the Emerald Isle’s Derek Warfield and The Young Wolftones to the MACC, this Fri., Jan. 27.) 6pm. FIRE, WATER & LIGHT: MOMENTS CAPTURED BY SEAN MICHAEL HOWER – It’s no secret MauiTime loves local photographer Sean Michael Hower, who’s been our staff photographer for, like, ever. He’s assembled a stunning show of his prolific work–his first solo exhibition, to be displayed through February–and we’re so proud-of and impressed-by him, we’re actually going to refrain from all ginger and bald jokes… (Love you, Sean!) Not to knock our dying breed or whatever, but a certain photographic panache is oft lost in newsprint; so if you’re a fan of Hower like we are, you ought to check out his show. Opening night’s this Sun., and features a performance by Kanoa Kukaua at 10pm. Free. 8pm-close. South Shore Tiki Lounge (1913 S. Kihei Rd.); 874-6444; howerphoto.com
