If you haven’t seen Steve Turre play the conch shell, drop everything and book tickets to his Hawaii Island appearance in the fourth annual Big Island Jazz and Blues Festival (June 4-7 at the Maui Kea Beach Resort). “We are honored to host the Big Island Jazz & Blues Festival for the third time with such revered Jazz and Blues artists presenting their incredible talents to the Big Island community and resort guests,” said Craig Anderson, General Manager at Mauna Kea. “We understand the importance of the arts and are privileged to be able to assist with bringing the festival back to the island for all to enjoy.”
There’s a huge list of performers who will play: sax player Bobby Watson; drummer Louis Hayes; piano master Howard Levy of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones; 2013 Blues Music Award winner and harmonica master Johnny Sansone, Turre (who also plays the trombone); and the Iguanas from New Orleans.
“Music and the arts is vital to every community and we are humbled to have such an extraordinary opportunity to bring such a historic jazz and blues festival back to Hawaii Island,” says festival founder Ken Martinez Burgmaier of Jazz Alley TV & HawaiiONTV.com Networks. “Each year, our Big Island Jazz & Blues Fest was a sold-out magical event that people are still talking about. For me, producing over 50 festivals in Hawaii and creating a festival that tributes America’s original music art form–jazz and blues–is an honor.”
