“POWER OF SALAD” (2002) DVD
Want to see two smelly guys provide epileptic and trance-inducing music to packed warehouses full of sweaty moshing kids having as much fun as if someone opened up CBGBs on Sesame Street? You need to check out Lightning Bolt. The current two-man flag bearers for avant noise (yes I just made that up) are Brian Chippendale on drums and “vocals”(Butthole Surfer-style gibberish) and Brian Gibson on bass. Their twin assault consists of grinding riffs and plodding splotches of distortion that take you to the edge of patience, before exploding into an endless gusher of ecstasy induced riffs, somehow managing to reference The Melvins, Napalm Death, Thelonious Monk, Led Zeppelin and Philip Glass—sometimes all in the same song. Besides providing some of the most exciting concert footage (all completely on the cheap—two hand-held cameras), Lightning Bolt pulls out the the ultimate show stopper—dragging the drum kit into the middle of the pit and finishing the gig from there.
I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy, but they’re definitely dirty. But a dog’s got personality. And personality goes a long way.
