I’ll admit it. When I was growing up in the surprisingly heavy rock scene of the golf course laden lands of Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra otherwise known as Palm Springs, I used to make fun of the local band of Queens’ origins, Kyuss. Back then I thought a rock band of my peers who took themselves so seriously was declasse. Over the years, as I’ve followed the sonic successes of vocalist/bassist Josh Homme and guitarist Nick Oliveri, I’ve been forced to eat my words; their first and second albums kicked ass. Majorly. But on their latest album,
Lullabies to Paralyze
, I was a little worried: Oliveri was gone. Yet as soon as I heard Homme’s characteristically cool drawl and explosive riffs on dark yet oddly catchy songs like “Everybody Knows That You’re Insane” and “Little Sister,” I was assuaged.
Lullabies
… does paralyze with edgy, slow-burning rock. But it also seems to get a little sleepy towards the end. —Interscope Records 2005 [SAMANTHA CAMPOS]
