There’s a vibration that covers Oahu’s North Shore in the winter. The holding periods for some of the biggest surf competitions give the coast a buzz like no other, while local surfers and residents go about their daily business amid giant waves and gorgeous beach-goers. The newest of Jazz Alley’s productions–the Oahu Jazz and Blues Festival–sets down there, at the Turtle Bay Resort.
The Turtle Bay Resort is legendary for hosting music festivals over the years, but the Jazz and Blues fest has a unique feel, bringing legendary artists from the world over to perform. The folks at Turtle Bay are tickled to be a part of it, especially after seeing that the Jazz and Blues Festival has proven so popular on Maui.
“We are proud to partner in bringing this event to Oahu, it continues to sell out year after year on Maui and the Big Island,” said Danna Holck, Vice President and General Manager at Turtle Bay. “These legendary artists have each made their mark on jazz and blues music, and having them all together at Turtle Bay for the first time is an honor.”
The event includes four days of jazz and blues, but the main event culminates at The Point, nestled in the middle of the resort, and features ocean views, local food trucks, Ocean Vodka and Maui Brewing Co. beverages and great entertainment. You can bring your own chairs and hang out on the lawn, or buy tickets for the seated sections and VIP areas.
The lineup is unique, mixing zydeco, blues, jazz and Hawaiian music. It includes performances from Jazz Hall Of Fame inductee Bobby Watson, Grammy winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis; and blues guitar legend Joe Louis Walker, who’s performed with the Rolling Stones, U2, Herbie Hancock, Quincy Jones, Sarah Vaughan, Sting, BB King and hundreds more. Also on the billing–the eternally danceable Iguanas. Blues harmonica and accordionist Johnny Sansone is also coming from New Orleans. Downbeat Magazine Guitarist of the year Bobby Broom will also be there, as will jazz singer Pam Baskin Watson.
This weekend is a great chance to see these artists jam. For the artists, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see the island and play with local musicians like Grammy winner Kawika Kahiopo, Na Hoku winners Paula Fuga and Benny Uyetake, The Jazz Alley TV Trio with Aaron Aranita, Chuck James, Alika Lyman and Maui’s Zenshin Daiko Drummers.
“Following the success of producing over 54 Music Festivals in Hawaii, I’m pleased to produce another music festival with such revered artists performing for the Oahu community and Resort guests,” said founder Kenneth K. Martinez Burgmaier, Maui Filmmaker & TV Host of the acclaimed Jazz Alley TV series & HawaiiONTV.com networks. “Music and the arts is vital to every community and we are humbled to have such an extraordinary opportunity to bring such a historic jazz and blues festival to Oahu for all to enjoy.”
