APPLES AND ONIONS
I’ve been a fan of Griffith for a long time. Griffith was the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, the Red Rockers. After the Red Rockers broke up, John became a solo artist and recorded two CDs, Son of an Engineer and Aluminum. He also sings and plays lead guitar in Cowboy Mouth. Anyway, Apples and Onions is his strongest effort yet. From the wistful “Blue Mountain” to the ironic “I’m an American,” Griffith paints a portrait of a man well traveled and weary, but also of a man in love and hopeful of the future. Another standout track is the acoustic version of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” You have to have a lot of confidence to sing an Al Green song but Griffith grabs a hold of the beast and makes it his own. —Valley Records 2001, By Stephen R.
