When Joan Osborne’s song “One of Us” climbed the charts to number 4 in 1995, people reacted. A pop song about God being among us on the bus, being a slob like one of us, hadn’t been done before. What’s more, Osborne’s sweet vocals on the song written by Eric Bazilian (The Hooters) had a hypnotic sing-along quality that still sticks with us.
Trying to think back to what I was doing when I was listening to Joan Osborne’s rise in 1995 is impossible. It was the 1990s, and I remember nothing from that decade. But I do remember the music and the popularity of Osborne’s song. I remember the indignation from some people who thought it was sacrilege, as well as those who embraced and welcomed the idea that God was among us.
Osborne agrees that the song was a break for her career. She told Joseph Hudak on RollingStone.com last October, “That song sent people to the album as a whole and allowed them to see that there were more dimensions to what I was doing. I’d be hard-pressed to be anything but overjoyed about the success of that song.”
