[PAGEANT] Since the beginning of theater, men have been wearing costumes to look like women. You see, women weren’t allowed to act on stage, so men had to play all the characters. There seems to be some discrepancy about how the term “drag queen” came to be, but one theory is that “drag” was the term used for lady costumes back in the day and “queen” refers to gay males. Either way, all of the gender illusionists I’ve met in my life have been sweet, energetic, friendly and inspirationally accessorized. Lucky for us, it’s time for the annual Miss Ke ala o ka malamalama Pagaent. Each year brings a new and exciting show to benefit the HIV/AIDS Foundation. This year, it’s going to be a tough one, as four previous Miss K title holders (2002- Chacha Frenzie, 2003 – Sheila Blidge, 2004 – Destiny Passion, 2005 Tyra) take on first time Maui challenger Lacie Cortez. Cat fight! And to make matters flashier, the theme is “Viva Las Vegas.” This reminds me of a song—“Badass Vegas hoes… late night bootie calls… shiny disco balls!” Tickets: $15. Call 242-4900.
