[ARTIST RECEPTION] In Los Angeles and Orange County, the radical artist Sandow Birk is a big deal. His paintings are epics, full of thunder and battle and snarling traffic. And now he’s got a new show—“Sandow Birk’s Divine Comedy,” his own special take on the Italian master’s adventure into hell. “‘Sandow Birk’s Divine Comedy’ may have started with Dante,” my friend and former colleague Rebecca Schoenkopf recently wrote in OC Weekly, “but Birk’s made the circles of heaven and hell his own.” The March 18 reception lasts until 8 p.m., but you might want to jot down a few future dates: At 6 p.m. on Sunday, March 19, Birk will be on hand as the Hui screens Dante’s Inferno, an all-puppet version of the old work based on Birk’s paintings. Then on Thursday, March 23, Birk will do a gallery walkthrough at 6:30 p.m. As always, admission is free. Call 572-6560, ext. 23 for more information. [ANTHONY PIGNATARO]
