[READING] Poet, essayist and anti-war activist Maxine Hong Kingston is a big deal. In 1997 President Bill Clinton gave her the National Humanities Medal, which is actually pretty tough to get. Anyway, she’s going to be on Maui live and in person to read from her new collection Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace. What, didn’t know she was a big anti-war activist, too? In 2003 as this nation got ready to invade and occupy Iraq she got arrested at the White House with a bunch of other Code Pink agitators. A few local vets, including Bill Stroud of Vietnam Vets of Maui, will be there as well. As will Poet Laureate W.S. Merwin. All in all, a really big show for the culture crowd. Suggested donation at the door is $10, but they’re not going to turn anybody away if you’re poor or something. The Studio Maui is located in the Haiku Marketplace at 810 Haiku Rd.
