RICHARD DIGIACOMO – Sat, Sep 13. Richard DiGiacomo, of Russian and Italian descent, is an accomplished artist who is known for his innovative approach to coloration. Transplanted to Maui, Hawaii in 2010, Richard was ascended to a new level of artistic ability with his newly-created metal fused art. Created by the etching of aluminum panels and color, and fused with various techniques, his technique calls for many coats of clear seals, applied to create depth and movement. Free. 2:30-5:30pm. SAM GRIM – Mon, Sep 15. His large photographs and video are accompanied by taped interviews of people who bring the stories and history back. NAOMI SHIHAB NYE- Fri, Sep 26. The Green Room presents award-winning Palestinian-American poet, writer, anthologist and educator Naomi Shihab Nye for a spirited and unabashedly authentic evening of conversation. Her talk, “Place,” will explore personal connection with place and is loosely based on her book Transfer. “Naomi Shihab Nye breathes poetry like the rest of us breathe air. When she exhales, the world becomes different. Better. ” — The Grand Rapids Press. She will also reflect on the work of Maui’s own Poet Laureate, W.S. MAUI CALLS- Sat, Sep 27. Check out one of the biggest benefit events of the year Maui Calls! The MACC grounds will be transformed into a wonderland of thematic décor, delighting the attendees who arrive and are greeted with fresh flower lei and Hawaiian music. “Celebrating the Music of Hawaii” is the theme of the 2014 event, with music flowing throughout the evening, from greeting to goodbye — including a concert with a (traditionally) surprise musical guest. Throughout the evening, guests may eat their fill of gourmet pupu and dessert creations offered by almost 20 of Maui’s finest restaurants, and sample fine wines of a dozen or more vintners and boutique wineries from California, Washington and Oregon. I OLA KANALOA KAHOOLAWE 2026 WORKING GROUP – This Thursday, join the conversation surrounding the future of Kaho’olawe at a “Kaho’olawe: 2026” Maui working group meeting. Around since June, the group consists of community members and representatives of the Kaho’olawe Island Reserve Commission, the Protect Kaho’olawe Ohana and the Office of Hawaiian Affairs. They’re attempting to put together a strategic plan for the island that will last through the year 2026. The first part of the discussion will include a 30-minute screening of the current ecological and spiritual practices used to restore the island following decades of military bomb testing.
