JOEL HEINZ–ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – Sun, Jun 22. Heinz began painting with no formal art training other than what he was able to pick up in school, from associating with other artists and from the joys of experimentation and discovery. He’s since gained a greater appreciation for the Hawaiian culture, and is particularly intrigued by ancient designs on tapa cloth and by Hawaiian petroglyphs. RICHARD DIGIACAMO–ARTIST IN RESIDENCE – Sun, Jun 22. Digiacamo is an accomplished artist who is known for his innovative approach to coloration. For more than 35 years, he has worked with celebrities, noted interior designers and leading institutions. Transplanted to Maui, Hawaii in 2010, Richard was ascended to a new level of artistic ability with his newly-created metal fused art. SANCTUARY SERIES: MAUI’S MANTA RAYS: AMBASSADORS OF OLOWALU REEF- Learn about Hawai‘i’s largest population of manta rays residing in Maui waters. With wingspans reaching over 22 ft across, these charismatic and graceful giants have touched the hearts and minds of people all over the world!This event is hosted by Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary, and Dr. Mark Deakos. Dr. Deakos has a Biology degree from the University of Waterloo, completed his master’s degree studying Humpback Whale behavior, and continued his graduate work by completing his doctoral degree with a focus on Manta Ray ecology at the University of Hawai‘i. DIABETES SELF-MANAGEMENT CLASSES- Every Wed, Jun 25-July 30. The County of Maui Department of Housing and Human Concerns’ Office on Aging will sponsor the “Better Choices, Better Health” Diabetes Self-Management workshop series. “Better Choices, Better Health” is an evidence-based educational health aging program designed to help people manage their diabetes as well as their overall health through achievable action plans for improving nutrition, exercise, relaxation, communication skills, medication management and more. Participants receive a book, “Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions,” and a relaxation CD, “Time for Healing.” Cost is $10 for individuals 60 years and older and for caregivers of any age. The cost is $35 for participants under the age of 60.
