JIM SMITH – April 7-May 4. Jim Smith is a mixed media artist combining wood, glass and light into a very unique and sometimes ever-changing art-form. Smith’s artwork is influenced by many regions of the world, from the Southwest–where he was born–to Africa and now Maui. He brings his expertise of more than two decades as an electrical engineer into play as several of his works have built-in, color-changing lighting. Reception is on April 11, 6-8pm. JOIE ‘YASHA’ TAYLOR – Fri, Apr 25 and Wed, Apr 30. Joie Taylor is an artist, meditation guide, dancer, musician and has PhD in engineering from Cornell University. No two pieces of her jewelry are the same. Her designs incorporate gemstones and fine beads with gold and silver metal forming techniques. “Gemstones and metals carry a specific quality that enhances physical, mental and often spiritual properties for sensitive souls,” Taylor says. “The aesthetic design of these pieces brings the inner beauty of the wearer to the surface.” Free. CHRIS LARSON – Mon, Apr 28. Chris Larson’s artistic journey began at 13 when she took an art class from her oil painter mother. Her journey continued merrily into watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, graphic design and photography. Chris says she loves how color, light and shadows visually define objects and enjoys using watercolors and acrylics to express that look in her paintings. She also enjoys taking her original photos through a series of creative processes and hand enhancements to get a vivid watercolor painting effect while staying true to the vision of her original image. 4-8pm. MAPA SPRING EXTRAVAGANZA-JAZZ, TAP AND HIP-HOP – Sat, May 3 & Sun, May 4. Maui Academy of Performing Arts presents three spectacular dance shows for the entire family. The weekend opens with MAPA’s annual dance recital on Saturday afternoon featuring dancers of all ages strutting their stuff in jazz, tap, Glee Club, Broadway Dance and Hip Hop. THE ENGLISH BEAT – Sat, May 10. Featuring founding member Dave Wakeling on vocals and guitar, with an amazing all-star ska band. MAUI BREWERS FESTIVAL – Sat, May 17. One of Maui’s favorite festivals features the specialty and craft brews of dozens of breweries from Hawaii and the Mainland, as well as scrumptious pupu samplers from many of the island’s favorite restaurants and caterers. Admission to the Festival includes a commemorative glass to use in sampling eight four-ounce pours of beer. There will be live music for entertainment, as well as prizes. Proceeds benefit the MACC’s many educational programs for students, teachers and seniors, as well as the many free events offered to the Maui County community. XAVIER RUDD – Thu, May 29. One of Australia’s most iconic voices is coming to the MACC. Rudd is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, surfer and environmental/cultural activist. He surrounds himself with an array of instruments: three didgeridoos in front of him, a guitar on his lap, a stompbox by his habitually bare feet and an assortment of drums, banjos, harmonicas, bells and bass guitar near at hand (or near at foot, as the case may be). Rudd’s songs touch on spirituality, humanity, environmentalism and the rights and mistreatment of the Aboriginal people of his homeland (he includes Australian and Canadian Aboriginal vocals in his songs).
