Band Geeks Unite!
Tuesdays (April 6, 13 & 27) at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center, Kahului
If you’ve ever had the opportunity to become close friends with a band geek without actually becoming one yourself, you understand that they are, deep down, extremely cool people. I know one who proudly hangs five guitars, alto and tenor saxophones, a penny whistle, flute, electric keyboard, harmonica and another instrument that I don’t even know what to call on his wall. On a regular basis (every third day) he asks me to move out so that he can use my space to build a soundproof music room with egg-carton walls. The fundamental difference between the band geek and the poser-rocker is that the band geek’s coolness factor starts off right above the kid with the green mole in sixth grade and rises exponentially with age as he logs one professional and academic achievement after another. Meanwhile, the poser-rocker peaks at 17 when he plays at his high school prom, and will be found ten years later eating
Spaghetti-Os out of a can and getting a few unfortunately stuck in his gelled hair in a basement somewhere. All that said, there really is no better way to spend your next few Tuesday evenings than watching the Maui Spring Band Concert Series at the MACC. Maui High School Band performs Tuesday, April 6 at 7pm. King Kekaulike High School Band performs Tuesday, April 13 at 7pm. Kalama Intermediate School Band performs Tuesday, April 27, at 6:30pm. 242-7469 or mauiarts.org Sierra Brown, MauiTime
