Thursday (Sept. 29), 9:30pm, Casanova (1188 Makawao Ave.); $10/$5 before 9:30pm
Remember when at summer’s end–though you loathed books and teachers’ dirty looks–you couldn’t wait to get back to school just to reunite with all your friends? That’s the sensation Maui Slam’s evoking with the return of their Back to School poetry slam, as they come again with a call to all “art freaks, band geeks, computer nerds, jocks, preps, thesbos, plastics, stoners and loners.” So do your homework and prepare your verse–while taking note that dark classroom sarcasm is, in fact, welcome; as are group projects and visual aides (i.e. costumes and props). The contest is open to all spoken word artists, poets and MCs–whether you consider your skills worthy of the short bus or AP assignment–and the kid who earns top marks will win a $100 cash prize. But keep in mind there are no hall passes if you’re tardy, and participants must sign up by 9:30pm. Oh, and extra credit includes the fact that the invitations (as ever) come via naughty librarian Ellen Peterson, and that the cute boys in class–DJ Boomshot and VJ Douglas Deboer–will augment your evening with turntable sorcery and eye candy alchemy.
