PINT NIGHT FOR THE BIRDS – Maui Brewing Company and the Maui Forest Recovery Bird Project (MFRB) are partnering for another evening dedicated to the birds. This Friday, half of the evening’s pint sales will go to the MFRB. Set up to help preserve Maui’s endangered birds, MFRB aims to restore, develop and educate. MFRB has been around since 1997 and centers specifically on the recovery of the Maui Parrotbill (Kiwikiu), native to the forests of Haleakala. 6pm-midnight. Maui Brewing Company. THE SEXBOTS – Casanova welcomes The Sexbots this Friday for an evening of electronic escape. The front woman and mastermind behind the group is Ilima Considine, and fans describe her music as “quirky” and “provocative.” The Sexbots’ debut album Don’t Stop has managed to make the CMJ charts at #32 without the backing of a label. The independent band pushes the boundaries of sexuality while exploring electronica. Razaman and DJ Monk will also be on roster, rounding out the night of entertainment. 21+. $5. 10pm. BATTLE OF THE ISLANDS – It’s time to roll out with the Maui Rollergirls’ for their “Battle of the Islands” this Friday (6pm) and Saturday (10am). Squads from Oahu, the Big Island and Kauai will join the Maui Rollergirls for two days of friendly competition. Refreshments and merchandise will be available for purchase. COMMUNITY WORK DAY – Community Work Day wants everyone to kokua. Volunteers are needed at one of three locations: Pulehu Rd. (near the landfill), Pu’unene Ave. (from Dairy Rd. to Hansen Rd.) and Dairy Rd. (from Pu’unene Ave. to Maui Lani Pkwy.) These areas experience high winds, resulting in large trash concentrations. Gather a group of friends and carve out a few hours this Saturday, to malama Maui. Community Work Day will provide materials (grabbers, gloves and bags) and schedule a trash pickup for your area. BRIAN REGAN – Comic Brian Regan has won over audiences with his everyday scenarios and relatively clean material. Originally pursuing accounting, Regan eventually found his passion for comedy following a push from a football coach. From his first CD release in 1997 to his annual 80-city tour to his late night TV and Comedy Central appearances, Regan has accumulated quite the fan base. RELAY FOR LIFE – The American Cancer Society wants everyone to participate in Central and South Maui’s Relay For Life this Saturday. This signature event celebrates survivors, remembers loved ones lost and raises awareness for the continuing battles that many face. ‘YOU GOT IT’ & ‘THE SPANISH GUITAR’ – The Maui Theater and Ulalena are welcoming two award-winning acts to their stage this Sunday. First is “You Got It!” with John Stephen (6:30pm) and then is Benise’s “The Spanish Guitar” (8:30pm). The first show pays tribute to Roy Orbison’s personal and private life and features spoken word by Orbison’s son and Stephen’s performances of Orbison’s hit songs including “Pretty Woman.” Then Benise, an Emmy-winning musician whose productions blend sultry dance numbers with edgy composition, uses samplings from classic groups including Bach, The Eagles and Led Zeppelin. MANA‘OLANA PINK PADDLERS – Mana’olana Pink Paddlers has been a place of refuge for cancer survivors and supporters alike. The result of a collaboration between Maui Canoe Club and the Abreast-in-a-Boat program, they fund early cancer screening for those who don’t have access to screening services. Whether paddling, buying pink or participating in ashes to sea ceremonies, MPP has a myriad of ways for you to show support. This Sunday, they’re inviting the public for a benefit concert and silent auction. Kathy Collins will host and Soul Kitchen will provide acoustics. $10. 2pm-5pm. ULUPALAKUA TURNS 50 – Ulupalakua Ranch has served the community for half a century and the community is invited to celebrate. A paniolo barbeque will feature lamb and hulihuli beef. There will be wine tasting, information booths, hula and a talk story session with owner Pardee Erdman. Look back with Erdman on the past 50 years and his role as the ranch’s longest running owner. Na Hoku Hanohano Award winner and Ulupalakua native Jeff Peterson, accompanied by Na Hoku Award winning artist Nathan Aweau, will provide live music. 11am-4pm. JAZZ COMBO CAMP – Maui Preparatory Academy is hosting Jazz Maui Combo Camp 2013 July 1-3. Youth in grades six-10 are welcome to participate in workshops centered around jazz combo instruments. Students will participate in jam sessions, improvisation and individual lessons. The three-day camp will conclude with a concert featuring the students and the Louis Romanos Quartet. MASTER JAZZ CLASS DEMO – Tommy James, the musical director of the Duke Ellington Orchestra, will conduct a class demonstration at the Ka‘ahumanu Center for a limited number of lucky jazz fans. NIGHT OF JAZZ – After his class at the mall, the Maui Arts and Cultural Center will host Tommy James for a huge jazz concert. The world class performer will be joined by the Louisiana-based Louis Romanos Quartet, Arturo O’Farrill Latin Jazz Orchestra, trumpeter Jim Seeley and saxophonist Peter Brainin.
